I found out about GeekGirlCon sometime in 2025, and I had thought about going that year, but life got in the way of living as it were. I decided earlier this year that I would go to 2026’s, however.
GGC takes place at the Seattle Convention Center – Arch’s 800 Pike building, so in addition to being hopefully a fun time, it would be good recon for Sakura-Con.
Here’s a short report!
Day 0, Friday, October 24, 2026:
I had to work today, so once I was done with work I immediately headed out to pick my badge up. There was no line at all, so I probably could’ve waited until the next morning, but I had plans this evening anyway, so it all worked out.
Day 1, Saturday, October 25, 2026:
I had every intention of waking up early enough to make it to the con at doors’ opening time, but alas, I overslept a bit. I did wake up in time to catch one talk from SeaGL that I looked interesting (SeaGL, the Seattle GNU/Linux Conference, was Friday and Saturday of this weekend as well. I watched a few talks while I worked on Friday).
After that, I headed out to head up to the SCC and make it to the con.
Upon arrival, I checked to see what upcoming panels I would want to attend and saw one titled “How to Make Your English Trans-Inclusive” at 11:30a. I decided to do a quick lap of the dealers’ room and artists’ alley (more on this later) first. After that, I wandered to the room this panel was in and it was a workshop. Fun. It really was a good thought experiment, and something I can likely apply to my daily life at work.
After this panel, I decided it was time to break for food as the next thing I wanted to go to was at 3:00p, so I headed out. I ran into a friend while I was out who was at the con too, so that was great.
I ended up hiking over to Westlake Center to grab lunch there. It’s actually not as bad of a walk to/from the SCC as expected. After lunch I wandered back to the SCC and killed a little bit of time before “Puck Around and Find Out: Hockey Goes Mainstream” which was really cool! CJ Jackson of the Seattle Torrent was on the panel! I grabbed a snack and a drink from the food vendor in the convention center after as I was feeling a little peckish, despite lunch being not that long before.
Anyway, the next thing I went to was “A Gaggle of Geeks: A Geeky Variety Show” at 4:30p, which was in the same location as the previous panel. This was really fun!
And to close the day out was “Dungeons and Drag Queens Live Show” at 6:30p. This was amazingly fun!
After this event, the con day was over before 8:00p, which was a bit weird to me considering every other con I’ve gone to has gone well past 8:00p and often past midnight.
After this I headed out to find food then wandered home a little bit later.
Day 2, Sunday, October 26, 2026:
I overslept again. Oops.
I had already decided that the first thing I wanted to go to today was a panel called “Full Contact: Forging Inclusive Communities in Sports”. CJ Jackson was on this panel too along with some trans athletes and while fencing or kendo wasn’t covered, I’d imagine in the PNW it wouldn’t be an issue for me on either.
After this I broke for lunch, where again I went by Westlake Center, then after eating headed back to the SCC to lock in for the rest of the day.
At 2:30p I attended “Compels Me Though: Crafting Compelling Characters” which was very interesting.
I stopped by the King County Library Services’ booth and got a KCLS library card, so now I have both the Seattle Public Library and KCLS’ resources available to me. I definitely need to make use of these at some point.
After I was done theree was one final run through the dealer area and picking up a drink from the food vendor before the vocal ensemble video game music concert to close the day out.
This was really cool and well worth attending. Once it was over, I decided to head home.
I decided to walk back to Westlake Center to use the restroom and picked up some candy from the candy shop at the mall.
I took a look as to which method would be best to get home and discovered the 4 has a stop a couple blocks from my apartment building: a short walk home and it was back to reality.
Will I go to GGC or SeaGL next year? Well, that all depends on if they happen at the same time again. A certain part of me thinks I’d have an overall better time at SeaGL, but we’ll see where life is next year.
Until next time!
